Young, Gifted and Fabulous… Why we loved the 70s

Donna Summer.png

Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross… no, not just the playlist to the next Jake event at Bermonds Locke on September 15 (that plug was smooth, right?) but some of the subjects of a new Taschen book of photographs by legendary photographer (that we’ve never heard of) Bruce W. Talamon called Soul. R&B. Funk. Photographs 1972-1982, which, as a title, seems a little clunky but hey, that’s just us being Virgos.

‘For ten glorious years, I had the best seat in the house,’ says Bruce as he introduces us to a skinny-as-a-whippet Chaka without so much as a weave, lots of James Brown with what must be ever-so-much-of-a weave, Michael Jackson looking young, skinny and actually African-American and Earth Wind & Fire done out in skin-tight rainbow-coloured satinette, as befits a group of straight musicians. It’s why we loved the 70s, people.
