London’s most expensive coffee, anyone?

Queens of Mayfair, which is an all-kinds-of-fancy coffee shop (whatever happened to just ‘café’?) in London’s glittering Mayfair has bagged itself a batch of the UK’s most expensive coffee.

Only 15 cups of the Ethiopian ‘Cup of Excellence’ will be available, with Queens of Mayfair’s roaster, Difference Coffee, one of only two UK businesses - and among only eight in the world - invited to purchase at auction the rare beans, which retail at £2,000 per kilogram, roughly the going rate for stardust. Each cup will set you back £50.

The coffee is graded a 94/95, which will mean something to someone, is expertly weighed to the gram, ground by hand and then brewed in a v60 filter. And then served in a crystal wine glass, which is a revolution in itself. The flavour develops and intensifies as the coffee cools – which you can’t say for your average Mellow Birds – and is light, fruity and floral.

‘We pride ourselves on the finest produce throughout our menu at Queens of Mayfair,’ says co-owner Victoria Sheppard, ‘and to have such a rare and highly sought after coffee to offer the true connoisseur highlights the standards we are aiming for.’
